Why Leadership Without Governance Fails: on The Human Loop

I joined The Human Loop to talk about why strong leaders still struggle without governance to steady them, and what founders and boards can do about it.

At the end of August I sat down with Ben Stocken on The Human Loop for an in-person conversation about something I see again and again in growing organisations namely capable, committed leaders who are let down by the absence of good governance.

Leadership gets the attention. Governance is less glamorous, but it’s what makes good leadership sustainable. It gives clarity on purpose, on who decides what, and on how the organisation holds itself to account. Without it, even the best leaders end up firefighting, carrying too much, or making decisions that drift away from what the business is for.

A few things we covered:

  • What’s the biggest thing I’ve learnt about leadership in the last 5 years

  • What good leadership and strategy are about and what they’re not

  • How I performed in the Decision Sprint

  • Where 3GL™ came from and how its four pillars (Purpose & Strategy, Roles & Accountabilities, People & Culture, Infrastructure) help leadership teams find the gaps

Thanks to Ben and the team at atherio and The Human Loop for a thoroughly interesting conversation and a great way to spend a Friday afternoon.

If any of this sounds familiar, find out more about 3GL™ or book a conversation.
